How to set up your email signature on iPhone

The iPhone Mail app has one signature setting, and it takes plain text. Here's how to set it per account, how to replace “Sent from my iPhone”, and what your options are if you want your full formatted signature on mobile.

Change your signature in the iPhone Mail app

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Mail.
  3. Tap Signature (below Composing).
  4. Tap the text field and type your signature. To use a different signature for each account, tap Per Account.
  5. Go back to save. New messages from the Mail app now end with this signature.

On iOS 17 and earlier the path is Settings → Mail → Signature. The steps are the same on iPad, in Settings → Apps → Mail → Signature.

Why iPhone signatures are text only

Apple's iPhone User Guide is explicit: “You can only use text in your Mail signatures.” There is no image button and no way to choose fonts or colors in the signature field, and the Mac's signatures don't sync to iOS.

That makes a good mobile signature short. Three or four lines are enough:

Type it directly in the field: name, role and company, and the number people should call. Your email address is already in the From line.

If you need a formatted signature on mobile

Honest options, from most to least reliable:

  1. Use the Gmail app for Gmail and Google Workspace accounts. Google's help says that if you don't create a mobile signature in the Gmail app, new messages use the signature you set on your computer. Set up your Fairsig signature in Gmail on a computer (guide), leave the app's mobile signature off, and your formatted signature goes out from your phone too.
  2. Keep a text version on the phone. Many people deliberately use a shorter signature on mobile. Recipients don't expect a logo on a quick reply sent from a phone.
  3. Pasting a formatted signature into the iPhone field. You'll find tutorials that copy a formatted signature from an email or web page and paste it into the signature field. Apple doesn't support this; at best some formatting such as bold text or links survives, tables and images usually don't, and it can stop working after an iOS update. We don't recommend relying on it for business mail.

Outlook app? It has its own signature setting under Settings → Mail → Signature. See the Outlook guide.

Don't have a signature yet? Make one in two minutes with the free Fairsig generator, then come back here. Use Copy signature (not “Copy HTML”) when you paste into a mail app's signature editor.

Questions

How do I remove “Sent from my iPhone”?

That line is the default signature. Go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Signature, delete the text, and type your own signature or leave it empty.

Can I add a logo or photo to my iPhone signature?

Not in a supported way. Apple's guide says you can only use text in Mail signatures on iPhone. If you need a logo on mobile, send from an app that uses a signature stored in your account, such as Gmail (see below).

Does the iPhone use the signature from my Mac?

No. Signatures from Mail on the Mac sync between Macs through iCloud, but the iPhone and iPad have their own signature setting.
